What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is a unique creative and expressive therapy. It involves an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music and all of its facets---emotional, physical, mental, social, aesthetic---to help clients express their inner world, gain insight, improve, restore or maintain health. What makes music therapy different from every other form of therapy is its reliance on music. Thus, at the core of every session is any number of musical experiences, which the therapist selects or designs according to the goals of the therapy. These may include: improvising (using instruments and/or voice), vocal work, re-creating, composing, listening exercises, symbolic use of instruments and musical guided imagery.

| WHY MUSIC | WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MUSIC THERAPY | |||
|
Music is generally perceived as a non-threatening medium and is not stigmatized. This makes it highly effective in gaining client participation and circumventing resistance (even in the most difficult of cases). Music can access emotions most naturally and directly and thereby bypass rigid defense mechanisms. An additional advantage is that since music is primarily a pre-verbal medium, it can be used therapeutically with clients who are nonverbal or verbally restricted.
|
Music therapy is used with individuals of all ages (children, teenagers, adults and the elderly) with a wide variety of conditions, such as: Emotional problems, behavioral difficulties, depression, selective mutism, communication difficulties, learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, hyperactivity, autism and PDD (pervasive developmental disorders), cerebral palsy, physical handicaps, mental retardation, , survivors of abuse and trauma, PTSD, psychosis and addiction. It is also used to promote self-actualization, to enhance self awareness, to stimulate developmental growth, facilitate relaxation and stress reduction. |
